Endodontics / Root Canals

Large cavities, infections or trauma can lead to a painful infection of the nerve, also known as an abscess. In a root canal, the infected nerve and bacteria which lies within the root of the tooth, is removed and replaced with a filling called gutta percha. A tiny hole is created to access and remove the infection. The hole created is then cleaned thoroughly and sealed upon completion. A dental crown is then placed over the tooth for protection and longevity. Most people are worried about root canal pain. At DS Dental, we know how to keep the patient feeling comfortable during the procedure. It’s a treatment that saves the tooth, which is ideal both in terms of function and cosmetics. Alternatively, the tooth would have to be removed, making root canals an excellent procedure to save and maintain your teeth.

The procedure is done under a local anaesthetic (although other sedation options are available). Root canals take about an hour to an hour and a half, and are generally comfortable (despite their bad reputation).
